Elsie Roy Elementary School
Completion date: 2004
Budget: $4.2 million

Overview

The setting of this 300-student elementary school is unique. Located in a high-density neighbourhood of residential complexes, retail, and public spaces, it adjoins a childcare facility overlooking False Creek and David Lam Park. Its design reflects the industrial history of the Roundhouse Neighbourhood, incorporating heritage elements such as the heavy timber at the entrance. The building has become a focal point of the community.

The DA Difference

This 29,000-square-foot project was delivered on a tight construction budget without compromising the learning environment, classroom size, or the unique aesthetic details of the neighbourhood. The two-storey design capitalized on site access and water views, while building costs were kept to $87 per square foot through an efficient steel structure, simple but durable cladding details, and cost-effective mechanical and electrical systems.
